We had a workshop meeting last week and I wanted to let you know what happened. If you want to watch the meeting from the beginning, click here. Otherwise, please feel free to use the links below to jump to particular portions of the meeting.

Before I get into the nitty gritty of the meeting, I want to tell you about something new that we did. We conducted a brainstorming session, where we looked at the township’s Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. This “SWOT” analysis is designed to help us structure a “big-picture” look at the state of the township. This first phase involved commissioners and community members randomly shouting out qualities that they thought fit in the 4 categories. If you are at all interested in knowing where our township stands, I highly encourage you to watch this process–it was only about 34 minutes long and does not take much attention to stay on top of. Click here to watch the SWOT brainstorming. If even 30 minutes is too much, click here to look at the final brainstorming list.

In future meetings, we will continue to process this list: the next step will be to group and prioritize entries, followed by making more formal statements about what each list item means. In the end, we hope to have a list of short, medium, and long-term action items.

We would love to have your feedback on this list. If there are things you think should be there, let me know. If you have thoughts about an entry, let me know. If you want to be involved in part of this, let me know. In any event … keeping our residents aware of exactly what we see as good and bad things in our community is important to us. And this is a big part of that process. So let me know if you have any thoughts!

Aside from the SWOT Analysis, here are the other things we did:

  • We discussed adopting the 2015 Allegheny County Hazard Mitigation Plan, which is necessary to make ourselves compliant in Emergency Management. We will be voting on this tonight. (Click here to jump to this portion of the meeting.)
  • We talked about holding another township meeting at Masonic Village and agreed to look into the scheduling logistics. (Click here to jump to this portion of the meeting.)

Our next meeting is tonight (April 18, 2016) at 7:00 PM at the Township Building. If you have any thoughts that you want me to share with the other commissioners, feel free to drop me a line. Otherwise, let me know if you have any other thoughts about the SWOT analysis.

Thanks! Enjoy springtime in Aleppo!

Best wishes,

Matthew Doebler

Aleppo Township Commissioner
